Men’s Soccer Preps for GAC/MIAA Tournament

Fort Hays State Men's Soccer is getting ready for the GAC/MIAA Tournament, where they face Rogers State, the No. 25 ranked team in the country, in Bethany, Oklahoma on Friday (Nov. 10) at 4 p.m. The Tigers enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed with a record of 8-7-2 overall. The GAC Tournament is set to be held at Southern Nazarene's home field since they won the GAC/MIAA Regular Season title.

The Tiger offense is clicking at the right time, scoring a whopping 16 goals the past five matches. Leading the charge in the scoring department is graduate student Blake Arndt, who is currently tied with the second most goals in the GAC (10). Elias Ovelar Semeniuk, now with seven goals on the year, is averaging 2.8 shots per match, ranking fourth in the conference. Ovelar Semeniuk snagged the Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 24) for his performances during conference play, as all of seven goals have come in conference matches. Pablo Orozco now has seven assists this season, tied for second in the conference and leads the Tigers. The FHSU defense, led by goalkeeper Ben Dixon, has been stellar as of late holding opponents to less than a goal per match the past five contests, while notching three shutouts.

As for the opposing side, Rogers State is 11-5-2 overall. Last Saturday (Nov. 4), Rogers State picked up a sweep of the regular season contests against FHSU with a 3-2 win in Claremore. Marcos Vasallo leads the Hillcats in scoring with 12 goals on the season and leads the GAC. Right behind him with eight goals is George Robinson. The series is tied between the two teams at 4-4-5 as FHSU looks to get its first win against Rogers State this season.

If the Tigers are victorious on Friday, they will face either No. 1 seed Southern Nazarene or No. 4 seed Northeastern State on Sunday (Nov. 12) in the tournament championship match. The winner of the GAC/MIAA Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. FHSU went 1-1 against SNU and 1-0-1 against Northeastern State during the regular season.
