Men’s Soccer Hosts Pair of Home Contests to Open 2023 Season

The FHSU Men's Soccer team will kick off its 2023 season at home against MSU Denver Thursday (Aug. 28) at 4:30 p.m. The Tigers will then take on UC-Colorado Springs (Sept. 3rd), set to start at 1 p.m.

The FHSU club returns 16 players to the pitch this season including team scoring leaders Blake Arndt and Callum Frogson. Both players combined for 11 goals and put more than half of their shots on goal. Other returning regular starters include defenders Chris Rios-Cruz, Inigo Jimenez, Jackson Elgas, and midfielder Tadhg Walsh. The Tigers bring in 15 newcomers, including five transfers and 10 freshmen. FHSU averaged 1.75 goals per match last season and outscored their opponents 21-10 as they finished with a 8-5-6 overall mark on the year. The Tigers finished 6-2-4 in conference play and were the three seed at the Great American Conference Tournament. Unfortunately, the Tigers were not able to make it out of the semifinals but are hopeful for another run at a conference title this year. Gerry Cleary enters his fifth season as head coach and holds a 40-19-11 record here at FHSU.

The MSU Denver Roadrunners finished the 2022 season 10-6-2 overall, and 4-5-1 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners ended last year with 5.3 shots on goal and averaged 1.6 goals per match. The Tigers were able to pull out a win in the last meeting between the teams pulling by a score of 2-0. The Tigers lead the all-time series against the Roadrunners 3-0.

The UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions wrapped up their 2022 season at 11-5-4 overall and 5-3-2 in the RMAC. UCCS averaged 2.1 goals per game and posted a RMAC-leading 7.3 shots on goal per game. The Mountain Lions were able to beat Regis University in the RMAC Tournament, but were not able to make it past the semifinal. The series history with FHSU is tied 2-2 with the last matchup leaning in favor of the Mountain Lions, 2-0, last season in Colorado Springs.

Live stats and live video will be available for both matches.
