Tigers Draw with Hornets in Weekend Finale

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team tied Emporia State on Sunday (Sept. 17) by a score of 1-1. The tie moved the Tigers overall record to 4-0-2, while the Hornets are now 0-3-3.

The scoreless tie was broken in the 23' by Montserrat Diaz who took it herself along the left endline, juking out two defenders and the keeper before knifing it into the net to notch the first goal of the contest. The goal for Diaz was her second of the season and also was the first time the Tigers have scored in the first period over the last three matches.

Emporia State responded with a goal to tie things at 1-1 after halftime in the 65'. Mackenzie Dimarco won an open field battle against Tiger keeper Isabel Robben to net her second goal of the year. Dimarco was assisted by Asta Kristindottir.

Both teams pressed hard for game-winning opportunity. Forward Allison Worley took two shots late in the match but was not quite able to connect.

The two teams combined for a total of 30 shots on the match. Emporia State had six shots on goal to Fort Hays State's five. Both goalies had their work cut out for them on the match. Isabel Robben recorded five saves on the day, preserving the result for FHSU as Dimarco wiggled free for two other one-on-one opportunities that Robben won with big time saves.

The Tigers will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday (Sept. 22) to take on the Washburn Ichabods. First kick is set for 6 p.m. in Topeka. After Friday's match the Tigers will head to Emporia for a rematch with the Hornets on Sunday (Sept. 24) to open MIAA play.
