Tigers Score Two Late to Fly Past Jets

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State Tigers faced the Newman Jets in an aggressive battle this Thursday night (Sept. 21). The match ended with a 2-0 victory for the Tigers, marking a significant win in the early stages of conference play.
 
The Tigers came into the game with a 1-4-0 record after a challenging start to the season. On the other side of the pitch, the Newman Jets were determined to improve their 1-2-2 record.
 
The first half unfolded with both teams displaying their defensive prowess. The Jets made a valiant effort, with their goalkeeper Juan Carlos Cordova making several crucial saves in the first half. The Jets defense stood tall, thwarting the Tigers advances. The Tigers were not able to score in the first half, but outshot the Jets 6-2.
 
The Tigers emerged from the break with renewed determination, and it wasn't long before they made their mark on the scoreboard. In the 63rd minute, Tadhg Walsh broke the deadlock for the Tigers scoring an excellent executed goal, leaving the Jet's defense and goalkeeper helpless. Oliver Larsen played a pivotal role in the build-up, providing the assist that set up the goal.
 
The Jets responded with vigor, pushing forward in search of an equalizer. However, the Tiger defense held firm. Blake Arndt, who had been a constant threat throughout the match, continued to create opportunities for the Tigers shooting four shots. In the 70th minute, the Tigers extended their lead with a goal from Collin Hershberger, who was assisted by Pablo Orozco. The Jets, now trailing 2-0, faced an uphill battle.
 
As the clock ticked down, the game intensified, with both teams giving their all. The Tiger's goalkeeper, Ben Dixon, showcased his skills with crucial saves, denying the Jets any hope of a comeback. The match ended with a 2-0 victory for Fort Hays State. The Tigers displayed aggressive play and their ability to convert key opportunities made the difference.
 
The Tigers now sit at 2-4 and 1-0 in the GAC, hoping to continue their winning ways heading forward in conference play. The Tiger's next match will be on the road this Saturday (Sept. 23) at 7:30 p.m. to face the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm in
Bethany, Okla.
