Myles Menges and
Josh Shaw of Fort Hays State Football were named to the CSC Academic All-America Football Team for 2024. Menges was a first-team selection on the defensive line, while Shaw was a second-team selection on the offensive line. Menges and Shaw are the first CSC Academic All-America selections for FHSU Football since 2022. The Academic All-America Team is voted on by members of College Sports Communicators nationwide.
Â
Menges and Shaw are the eighth and ninth CSC Academic All-America selections during head coach
Chris Brown's tenure. They are the 19
th and 20
th selections overall for FHSU Football. They bring Fort Hays State's all-time CSC Academic All-America count to 74, with the first awarded back in 1975. Fort Hays State has three CSC Academic All-America selections so far this academic year after Tadhg Walsh of men's soccer was a selection earlier this year.
Â
Menges staked claim to a first-team selection this year by raking in several performance accolades for 2024. He was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, named All-America by three entities (AP First Team, Don Hansen Honorable Mention, D2Football.com Elite 100), and a finalist for the annual Cliff Harris Award for the top defensive player in the country in NCAA Division II. Menges was a Health and Human Performance major at FHSU with a 3.81 undergraduate GPA and a 3.75 graduate GPA.
Â
Menges finished the year with 27 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. His most impressive stat was 11 pass breakups, batting down several passes at the line of scrimmage. He led all defensive linemen in NCAA Division II by a landslide, the only one to reach double figures, and it ranked 16th nationally all behind defensive backs, which dominate the category. Menges finished his FHSU career with 182 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, 2 interceptions, 23 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Â
With a unanimous selection to the All-MIAA First Team on the offensive line in 2024 coupled with his perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA as an Agricultural Business major, Shaw excels both on the field and in the classroom. He was one of seven individuals with a perfect 4.0 undergraduate GPA named to the Academic All-America Team this year in NCAA Division II. Shaw is a two-time All-MIAA selection as an offensive lineman. An interesting note is that his father, Brian Shaw, was a two-time CoSIDA (now CSC) Academic All-America selection in football at the University of Nebraska in 1998 and 1999, also with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Â
Shaw started all 11 games for the Tigers during the regular season, even making two spot starts at center due to injuries, aside from his normal left guard position where he made the other nine starts. He helped the Tigers produce 402 yards of total offense per game during the regular season, which included 169.3 yards per game on the ground and 232.7 yards per game through the air. The Tigers scored 40 touchdowns and racked up 241 first downs in the regular season.
Below is the CSC Academic All-America Football Team in NCAA Division II for 2024.
