KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State men's wrestling team had two competitors reach the podium Saturday (Nov. 22) at the Younes Hospitality Open.
Ryan Patterson placed fourth in the 197-pound elite bracket, while
D'Andre Brown placed sixth in the 125-pound elite competition.
Â
The Tigers accumulated 20 wins on the day, including 12 in the elite brackets and eight in the intermediate division. Five Tigers picked up multiple wins inside the Kearney SportsPlex.
Â
Patterson reached the third-place bout thanks to three-straight wins in the consolation bracket. After falling to the top-ranked wrestler in the country in the quarterfinal, the junior picked up a 15-0 technical fall and an 8-4 decision to reach the consolation semifinal. Patterson was awarded a medical forfeit win over the ninth-ranked wrestler in the nation before falling to a Division I competitor from Wyoming 8-6 in the third-place match.
Â
Brown also used a big run in the consolation bracket to reach the podium. After falling by decision in the first round, Brown won four in a row to reach the consolation semifinals. The redshirt junior opened his run with a pin before picking up a win via medical forfeit. Brown then added an 8-6 decision and extended his day with a 4-1 sudden victory win before dropping the final two matches of the day against DI opponents.
Â
Jarret Mader was the only Tiger to win multiple bouts in the championship bracket, doing so in the elite 149 bracket. The junior transfer picked up a pair of high-scoring decisions, winning 18-14 in the first round and 13-11 in the second round before dropping his next two matchups.
Â
Corbin White went 2-2 in the 157-pound elite bracket, securing a 8-0 decision and a 10-5 sudden victory on the backside of the bracket.
Cash Thomas (157 elite) and
Tacoma Augustine (141 intermediate) both recorded one win on the day.
Â
Competing unattached,
Kaden Markley went 3-2 in the 149-pound intermediate division, including two pins. Four Tigers also added intermediate wins while competing unattached, including
Aiden Shields (125),
Micah Castro (157),
Ernesto Duenez (174) and
Cameron Shultz (184).
Â
The Tigers will return to action in two weeks when they host a tri-dual with No. 25 Colorado School of Mines and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, December 6 before hosting the Bob Smith Open the following day.
