Tigers Close Out Non-Conference Play at Regis Saturday

Fort Hays State (7-3, 0-2 MIAA) at
Regis (1-7, 0-3 RMAC)
Saturday, December 20 – 4 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. MT
Denver, Colo. – Regis Field House

Fort Hays State will wrap up its regular season non-conference play on Saturday (Dec. 20) with a game at Regis University. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. MT in Denver. The Tigers enter at 7-3 overall, currently on a two-game win streak, while the Rangers are 1-7 overall and have lost their last five games.

The Tigers are coming off a 68-64 win at MSU Denver on Thursday night. The Tigers trailed by eight at halftime but used runs of 12-4 and 14-0 to build a healthy second half lead before hanging on for the win late. Dan Mukuna led the Tigers with 25 points, followed by a season-high 20 points from Jahvari Martino. Kyle Grill added 17.

The Rangers are coming off an 87-73 loss to Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. Regis trailed by just three at halftime after leading by five, but never regained the lead in the second half. Regis' lone win this year was at home over University of Texas-Dallas by a score of 97-93 back on November 22.

Fort Hays State holds a 23-7 lead in the all-time series with Regis and has won the last six games. The Tigers defeated the Rangers 80-62 in Hays last year. Regis' last win in the series was in 2003-04 when both were members of the RMAC, a 70-59 result in Denver. That was the only game the Rangers have ever won against FHSU head coach Mark Johnson, who holds a 10-1 record against the Rangers.

Fort Hays State is 7-1 in its non-conference regular season slate so far this year. The Tigers have posted a winning record in their non-conference regular season schedule in all 24 years possible under head coach Mark Johnson and have won at least five non-conference games every year he has led the program. The only year the Tigers did not have non-conference games in the regular season was in 2020-21, the COVID-19 season when FHSU played nothing but conference games.

Mukuna continues to lead the Tigers at 17.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Grill averages 13.9 points per game, while Jahvari Martino adds 10.6 per game. Lucas Hammeke leads the team in assists at 3.6 per game.

Cooper Frith leads Regis in scoring at 18.3 points per game, while Gunner Walters adds 10.8 per game. Matt Yost leads in rebounding at 6.8 per game.
