Conference Play Begins Thursday for No. 3 Tigers

The third-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team opens conference play this weekend on the road beginning Thursday (Dec. 4) against Central Missouri. First tip against the Jennies is set for 5:30 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.

The Tigers enter the weekend 6-0 overall, tied for the 10th-best start in program history, while the Jennies are 4-2 overall. FHSU in true road games this year, while UCM is 1-1 at home.
 
FHSU has had one of the top offenses in the country so far this season, ranking first in Division II with 21.3 assists per game, third in field goal percentage (49.6 percent) and 10th in scoring (81.0 ppg).
 
Playing in her 100th career game Thursday, Brooke Loewe is 30 assists away from breaking the school's career assists record (478, Maisha Prewitt, 1997-01). The senior leads all NCAA Divisions with an average of 10.2 assists per game this season. The top DI average is 8.9, while the next-best average in DII is 8.0. Loewe's 14 assists in a game, a feat she accomplished twice in five days before Thanksgiving, are the most in a game by a DII athlete this season.
 
Talexa Weeter leads Division II and would also rank first in DI with an average of 29.0 points per game. Only Alexa Charles of DIII school Hunter with 33.3 points per game averages more points per game across all NCAA Divisions. She's scored 25 or more points in five of six games this season, including three with 30-plus.
 
Weeter (52.1 percent) and Olivia Mortensen (50.8 percent) rank 2-3 in the MIAA in field goal percentage, respectively, while Weeter's 8.8 rebounds per game are second-most in the conference. Mortensen also ranks fifth in the MIAA with 2.0 steals per contest, while Ellie Stearns is averaging 2.3 made 3-pointers per game, fifth-most in the MIAA.
 
Scouting the Jennies
- The Jennies are 4-2 on the year, including a 1-1 record at home.
- UCM leads the MIAA and ranks 19th in DII with a rebound margin of plus-10.5.
- Reese Schaaf is third in the conference with a shooting percentage of 50.8 percent, while Taylor Weishaar is fourth in the league with a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game.
 
Series History with Central Missouri
- Winners of four in a row against the Jennies, FHSU has narrowed the gap in the all-time series to 24-21 in favor of UCM.
- The Tigers are 6-13 on the road against UCM, including a win in the most recent trip to Warrensburg. The Jennies had won five-straight at home against FHSU until last season.
- FHSU dropped the first two games against the Jennies under head coach Talia Kahrs two years ago before winning each of the last four, including a three-game sweep last season. The Tigers are 1-1 on the road against UCM during the Kahrs era.
- The Tigers are 16-15 against UCM in MIAA regular season matchups since joining the league in 2006.
 
Last Meeting with the Jennies
- The No. 9 Tigers never trailed in a 90-74 MIAA Quarterfinal win over the Jennies last March in Kansas City, Mo.
- Talexa Weeter erupted for 35 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs at the time for the then-sophomore. That point total was fourth-most ever in an MIAA tournament game.
- It was the highest scoring game ever for the Tigers in the MIAA tournament and was the most points scored by a women's team in the tournament since 2016.
- The Tigers dominated on the boards, outrebounding UCM 42-26.
