Remembering the Legendary Career of Former “Voice of the Tigers” Bob Davis

Former "Voice of the Tigers" and "Voice of the Jayhawks" Bob Davis passed away last week on March 20, 2025 at the age of 80. He was retired and living in Lawrence, Kansas following his storied Hall of Fame broadcasting career that spanned 48 years in the state of Kansas. His wife of 53 years, Linda, passed away just seven days prior on March 13, 2025.

Davis was born in Iola, Kansas and grew up in Topeka. He remained in Topeka for his college years, attending Washburn University where he graduated from in 1967.

Davis started his legendary broadcasting career with KAYS radio in Hays in the summer of 1968. He was the fifth of FHSU's storied lineage of play-by-play "Voice of the Tigers", calling Fort Hays State games for 16 years until 1984. His tenure culminated by calling the 1984 NAIA Men's Basketball national championship game the Tigers won over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Kansas City, 48-46 in overtime. It was the first of three national titles in FHSU men's basketball program's history. He was the longest tenured "Voice of the Tigers" of the first seven to hold the title until passed by current "Voice of the Tigers" Gerard Wellbrock, now in his 23rd year on the call.

In the spring of 1984, Davis was hired as the "Voice of the Jayhawks" where he worked alongside other University of Kansas broadcasting legend Max Falkenstein. He was on the call for the Jayhawks for 32 years until his retirement in 2016. He was on the call for KU's 1988 and 2008 men's basketball national championship victories.

In addition to his role with KU, Davis called the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four for CBS Radio six times in the 1990s. In 1997, he joined the Kansas City Royals as well, calling Major League Baseball games for radio and television for 16 years. Davis was a familiar voice in so many Kansas households for multiple decades for his work at both the collegiate and professional sports levels.

Davis was the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association 14 times. He was also a recipient of the Oscar Stauffer Sports Broadcasting Award twice by the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) in the 1970s while working in Hays.

Davis belongs to several Hall of Fames, including:
