MARSHALL, Minn. - The Fort Hays State men's wrestling team picked up one team win at the Iron Mike Duals Friday (Jan. 9). The Tigers (3-6, 1-0 MIAA) defeated host Southwest Minnesota State 24-15 after suffering defeats against Quincy, Sioux Falls and Northern State.
 
Cason Lindsey and Ryan Patterson both went a perfect 4-0 on the day, including four bonus-point wins for Patterson at 197 and two for Lindsey at 165. The Tigers combined for 17 individual wins on the day.
 
Kaiden Hoffman got the Tigers on the board against the Eagles with a 6-5 decision at 141 pounds, winning thanks to a late takedown. A pair of first-period takedowns later helped Cason Lindsey a 10-4 decision at 165 pounds. Ryan Patterson then secured a dominant 18-3 technical fall at 197 pounds thanks to three takedowns, two reversals and four nearfall points. Quincy took the other seven bouts, winning 32-11.
 
Sioux Falls went up 17-0 to start the second match of the day with four-straight wins, but FHSU won the next four to battle back within 17-15. Lindsey started the run with a 15-3 major decision that included four takedowns before Ernesto Duenez captured a 6-1 decision at 174 pounds thanks to a third-period takedown.
 
Houston Frank kept things rolling with an 11-8 win, taking the lead for good with a takedown with 30 seconds remaining. Patterson followed with his second technical fall of the day, managing six takedowns to defeat his opponent 19-3. The Cougars took the final two bouts, securing a 29-15 win.
 
The Tigers fell behind 13-0 after three bouts against Northern State before Lindsey stopped the bleeding with a 4-3 decision. FHSU got back on the board at the top weights when Patterson and Jaxson Thomas recorded back-to-back pins, pulling FHSU within 24-15 with two bouts to go. But the Wolves bounced back, taking the final two matchups to win 36-15.
  
The final matchup of the day opened at 149 pounds, with Jarret Mader using three first-period takedowns to lock up a 14-6 major decision. The Mustangs answered with a technical fall to take a momentary 5-4 lead, but Lindsey finished his perfect day with an 18-9 major decision to put the Tigers back up 8-5.
 
Duenez followed with his second win of the day, capitalizing on a second-period takedown to earn a 4-0 decision. Frank followed with another victory at 184 pounds, managing two takedowns and a four count to lead to a 12-6 decision. Patterson kept things rolling with an 11-1 major decision behind the strength of three takedowns to finish the afternoon 4-0.
 
Thomas secured a 5-0 decision at 285 pounds, picking up his second win of the tournament and putting FHSU in front 21-5. Jett Schwartz picked up the final win of the day for FHSU, recording two takedowns, four escapes and a two-point nearfall to lock down a 12-5 decision at 133 pounds.
 
Looking ahead, the Tigers will return to action next weekend (Jan. 18) when they travel to Warrensburg, Mo. for the Roger Denker Open.
