Quick Start Not Enough for Tigers Against No. 8 Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A quick start for the Fort Hays State volleyball team was promptly answered by No. 8 Missouri Western Saturday (Oct. 17), with the Griffons knocking off the Tigers 3-0. FHSU (15-9) led by as many as six midway through the opening set before the host Griffons (17-3) woke up to complete the sweep 21-25, 8-25 and 18-25.

After the Tigers knocked off No. 15 Washburn in four sets on Friday and the Ichabods defeated the Griffons on Thursday in five sets, all three teams leave the St. Joseph pod of the 2026 MIAA in-season tournament with a record of 1-1.

The Tigers used their strongest scoring stretch of the match in the first set, moving from a 7-6 deficit to a 14-8 lead. Delaney Gish's service turn produced four straight points during the run, and Mylie Brown added a kill in the larger stretch. FHSU later led 18-13, but a 12-3 Griffon run gave the home team the win.

The Griffons maintained the momentum the rest of the way, leading wire-to-wire in a 25-8 second set and a 25-18 third set.

Ella Goodwin led the match with 10 kills while hitting .333 and adding five digs. Haylee Wolf recorded a team-high 15 digs and added six assists. Annie Eaton finished with 17 assists, 10 digs and one block assist.

The Tigers will be back home on Tuesday (Oct. 20) to wrap up non-conference play against Bethel College for the annual Pink Out match. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The team will be auctioning off its pink jerseys from the match to support the FHSU Foundation's Dig Pink scholarship.
