Volleyball Never Trails in Senior Day Sweep

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team never trailed in a 3-0 sweep against Missouri Southern on Senior Day Saturday (Nov. 7) inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, winning 25-13, 25-9, 25-11. The Tigers (18-12, 5-7 MIAA) led wire-to-wire in each set, scoring the first five points in the first set, four in a row to win the second set and a whopping nine-straight to begin the final frame.

FHSU hit .302 for the match and racked up 10 aces and 54 digs while holding the Lions (7-19, 1-11 MIAA) to a -.041 hitting percentage. With the result, the Tigers are now tied with Central Missouri in the win column for the No. 8 spot in the MIAA standings. A Jennie loss to No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney would allow FHSU to clinch a spot in the conference tournament for a third-consecutive season.

Carsyn Cormaney recorded two kills and Annie Eaton added a service ace in the run to open the first set. Haylee Wolf's service turn later produced four straight points from 11-5 to 15-5, including two Peyton Bergschneider kills, before the Tigers closed out the set 25-13.

In the second set, FHSU put it away with a 6-0 closing run, finishing the set at 25-9 on an Ashlyn Reeves kill from Eaton. Earlier, Bergschneider had three kills in the first four rallies, and the Tigers added late serving pressure with consecutive aces from Bergschneider and five straight service points from Jaden Goldberg.

Eaton served eight straight points and recorded three aces as FHSU took command of the third set with the first nine points. Ella Goodwin added three early kills in that opening stretch, and the Tigers continued to get points from Mylie Brown, Regan Widener, Bergschneider and Avery Eshleman later in the set. Brown finished the set with a kill from Eaton, giving FHSU a 25-11 set win.

Goodwin led Fort Hays State with 10 kills while hitting .450 and adding three digs. Eaton finished with 26 assists, five service aces and five digs. Wolf recorded 23 digs and four assists. Bergschneider posted seven kills, seven digs, three block assists and two aces.

Should the Tigers qualify for the conference tournament, FHSU would play in the quarterfinal round on Thursday (Nov. 12) in St. Joseph, Mo.
