Women's Wrestling

Ten Tigers Take Their Shot at Qualifying for NCAA Championships

After closing out the regular season in early February, 10 members of the No. 12 ranked Fort Hays State women's wrestling team prep for the NCAA Region 6 Championship this weekend in St. Charles, Mo. (Feb. 21-22). A total of 30 wrestlers from the regional (the top 3 in each of the 10 weight classes) will qualify for the first-ever NCAA Championship for women's wrestling in Coralville, Iowa.

Nine of the 10 Tigers competing in the regional have placed in tournaments this season. Alexis Burton leads that list with five tournament placements, followed by Isabella Renfro with four. Eight of the 10 have won at least one tournament this season, led by Renfro's three tourney titles.

Renfro and Leiannah Landreth go into the regional as FHSU's two NWCA individually ranked wrestlers. Renfro is No. 2 in the nation at 180 with a record of 27-1, while Landreth is No. 9 in the nation at 117 with a record of 18-8.

Six of the 10 Tiger wrestlers have recorded 15 or more wins this season, while three others have the chance to reach that mark this weekend. Peyton Hellmann (25) and Morgan Maschmann (22) are the two Tigers aside from Renfro who have at least 20 wins this season.

Isabell Ortiz, Nichole Moore, and Renfro will be looking to punch their ticket to nationals for the second-straight year. All three competed at the NCWWC Championships last year before women's wrestling became an NCAA Championship sport this year. Moore is a three-time All-America performer, twice in NAIA at Baker University and once at the NCWWC Championships while at McKendree University.

Live results will be available via TrackWrestling/FloWrestling.
