KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had its hopes of a repeat MIAA Tournament title dashed on Friday night (Mar. 6) as Rogers State used a big second-half rally to knock off the Tigers. The Hillcats took the contest 70-63, scoring 47 points after halftime with hot shooting. FHSU went to 19-10 overall with the loss, while RSU improved to 20-9.
The game was a tale of two halves. The Tigers got out of the gate well in the first half and shot the ball at a 54.8 percent clip, while holding the Hillcats to just 34.8 percent. That staked the Tigers to a 39-23 advantage at halftime. In the second half, it was the reverse as the Hillcats shot 59 percent to the Tigers' 28.6 percent. Another huge disparity in the game was the free-throw line, where Rogers State shot 32 attempts to just 12 for FHSU. The Hillcats outscored the Tigers by 16 points at the free-throw line, 23-7.
The Tigers scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in the first half. They used a 9-2 run to lead by 12, 20-8, then a 10-2 run to lead by 18, 30-12. That was the biggest lead of the game for FHSU at the 6:00 mark of the first half. They took a 16-point advantage into the locker room.
Rogers State slowly chipped away at the least and had the Tiger advantage down to seven by the 10:22 mark. An
Eli Lawson stick back put the lead back up to nine, but the Hillcats kept charging and ran past the Tigers with a 14-0 run to lead by five with 5:39 to play. The Tigers got back within two in the final five minutes, but the Hillcats were too good at the free-throw line in the clutch moments. RSU went on to win the game by seven.
Kyle Grill led the Tigers with 17 points, while
Dan Mukuna added 14 and
Jahvari Martino had 13. Grill led the Tigers in rebounding with eight and tied Martino for the high in assists, both with three.
Tim Jordan, Jr. led the Hillcats with 16 points, while Caden Fry had 15, Jabryn Anderson had 13, and Andrew Mason had 12.

Mark Johnson. The NCAA Selection Show will be Sunday night, but the Tigers were not referenced in the top 10 of the latest NCAA Region Rankings released back on Wednesday.
