Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

One Goal Enough for Regis to Stun Nationally Ranked FHSU in Hays

HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State could not find an equalizer in a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Regis on Saturday night (Aug. 29) at FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. The Rangers knocked off the No. 3 ranked Tigers in what was their season opener, while FHSU moved to 1-1 on the season despite outshooting the Rangers 10-7.

Fort Hays State maintained a steady offensive presence in the first half, highlighted by five shot attempts, including a pair on target by Tiernan Nicewander, both saved by Regis goalkeeper Zach Jennings. The game remained scoreless at halftime as FHSU held a slim 4-3 shot advantage.

Regis capitalized on its opportunity in the 56th minute when Jacobo Betancourt-Tovar was in the right location inside the box off a failed clearance by the Tigers. He had a lane to send a rifle shot into the left, which proved to be the game winner.

Scott Dillon had a touch on a pass inside the box only about a minute later that unfortunately found Regis keeper Zach Jennings in the perfect spot to make a save. That was the most threatening opportunity the Tigers had in the second half, despite trying to apply constant pressure.

The loss snapped a 19-match unbeaten streak at home for FHSU, which dated back to 2024. That was the last time FHSU lost on its home pitch, also by a result of 1-0 to Rogers State.
