HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team was unable to slow down seventh-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday evening inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, falling in straight sets. The Tigers (10-4, 0-1 MIAA) totaled 33 kills and hit .152 with 33 kills, while the Lopers (12-1, 1-0 MIAA) finished at .388 with five errors.
Playing in front of a sizable crowd of 818, the teams traded points early. FHSU secured kills from
Mylie Brown and
Ella Goodwin to reach a 3-3 tie, but the visitors scored the next five points to take control. Kills from
Peyton Bergschneider,
Carsyn Cormaney,
Regan Widener,
Haylee Wolf and Goodwin were unable to help the Tigers pull any closer, with UNK taking the set 25-12.
FHSU again led 3-2 on a Bergschneider kill, but the Lopers answered with six straight points to move ahead for good. A kill from Cormaney narrowed the deficit to four but UNK continued to control things on offense, closing out another 25-12 win.
The Tigers led my as many as three early in the third set thanks to multiple kills from Brown and Cormaney. FHSU later stayed within 13-12 after Goodwin's kill, but the Lopers scored six in a row to move ahead 19-12 before taking the set, 25-17.
Reeves shared the team lead with seven kills and hit .313 while Brown also added seven kills. Wolf recorded a team-high 16 digs while adding five assists and a rare libero kill.
Annie Eaton finished with 20 assists and five digs while Cormaney posted six kills, three digs and a team-best three blocks.
Up next, the Tiger volleyball team travels to Topeka, Kan., to face No. 13 Washburn on Friday, (Sept. 18). First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Lee Arena.
