LINDSBORG, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis opened its 2026-27 season at the Bethany Invitational tournament held on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 4-5). The Tigers had five individuals claim singles titles in their respective draws, while two Tiger doubles teams were also victorious in their respective draws.
The team of
Sandra Rodriguez and
Albany Pulido went 3-0 to claim the A draw in doubles, while
Janae Montoya and
Madeline Deters went 3-0 to claim the C draw.
In singles play, Rodriguez claimed the B draw with a pair of wins, while Pulido took the C draw with three-straight wins. Teammates
Mekenzy Clark and
Kali Keough met in the D draw final and Clark took the match 8-5, giving her a 3-0 performance in the bracket. Montoya met her doubles partner Deters in the E draw final and Montoya rallied back for a win in a tiebreak 7-6 (8-6).
Diana Souza rounded out the bracket champs for the Tigers by claiming the F draw with three-straight wins.
Sydney Schumaker took third in the F draw with a 2-1 mark in the bracket.
Pulido led the way for FHSU with a 6-0 weekend between singles and doubles combined, while Rodriguez was also undefeated with a 5-0 mark between singles and doubles. Deters and Montoya each went 5-1 for the weekend. Clark and Souza each notched four wins for the weekend.
Overall, the Tigers went 20-7 in singles play at the tournament and 8-5 in doubles play. FHSU is set to return to action next weekend in a dual with Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 12).
