Lucas Houchin

Lucas Houchin enters his second year as an assistant coach at Fort Hays State in 2019-20. He brought valuable experience to FHSU from serving as an assistant coach at Howard College, and also serving as a student manager at Missouri State University and the University of Kentucky.

Houchin is very active with summer basketball camps, having worked at the University of Kentucky, University of Utah, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, University of Dayton, Marquette University, and Purdue University.

As an assistant coach at Howard College, he helped lead the Hawks to a 22-9 record and an appearance in the 2018 NJCAA Region 5 Men’s Basketball Tournament. His duties for the Hawks included player development, scouting, recruiting, video coordinator, and academic monitoring.

During his time as a manager, Houchin worked with players that went on to play in the NBA or professionally overseas. The list of players includes NBA draft lottery picks De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and Bam Adebayo, along with current NBA players Isaiah Briscoe, Hamidou Diallo, Wenyen Gabriel, Mychal Mulder, and Marcus Marshall. Other professional players include Dominique Hawkins, Derek Willis, and Isaac Humphries.

“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work at Fort Hays State University for Coach Johnson. His values of hark work, both in athletics and academics, along with integrity, and generosity are evident in his actions, and are reflected in the players as well. I am learning to be a better coach and person each day under Coach Johnson’s tutelage,” said Houchin.

Houchin received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Economics from the University of Kentucky. He is currently working to obtain a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration at Fort Hays State University.
