After a strong first half performance this week, Melissa Nelson earned Athlete of the Week honors. Nelson scored 16 first half points to help the Tigers cruise to a 56-28 halftime lead en route to a 95-61 win over Bethel College, improving the Tigers' record to 6-0 on the season going into MIAA play.
Nelson, a junior guard from Holton, Kan., finished the game with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range, in just 23 minutes. She was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Nelson added three steals, two assists, two rebounds and one block.
For the season, Nelson is averaging double figures for the Tigers at 10 points per game. She is currently the third leading scorer for FHSU. The junior has started all six games this season.
The Tigers are 6-0 and begin conference play on Wednesday on the road at Lincoln. A season ago, the TIgers swept the Blue Tigers in their two contests. Tip-off for Wednesday's game is set for 5:30 p.m.
