Tigers Return Home for MIAA Tilt on Saturday

Live Stats

After two straight road games, the Fort Hays State women's soccer team returns home for their final three games of the season. The Tigers open the three-game streak with a Saturday (Oct. 22) matchup against Missouri Western at 5 p.m. at the FHSU Soccer Stadium. The game is the final MIAA conference contest for the Tigers this season, their first in school history.

The two teams played earlier this season in a non-conference tilt. FHSU defeated the Griffons, 2-1, on Sept. 24 in St. Joseph, Mo. In the first game, Missouri Western scored first, 15 minutes into the game; however, sophomore Joanne Glynn scored two second-half goals to push the Tigers to the victory.

The Tigers (4-10, 1-6 MIAA) are looking to get back on track after dropping four straight to stiff competition. In their last four games, FHSU fell to No. 10 Central Missouri, Northwest Missouri State, Missouri Southern –all teams in the top half of the MIAA – and Dallas Baptist, which is the only school this season to knock off UCM this season. Despite the four losses, the Tigers continued to get productive from Joanne Glynn and Cindy Benitez. Glynn, a sophomore from Lakewood, Colo., scored in both the NWMSU and Missouri Southern games. She leads the team in goals (seven) and points (15). Cindy Benitez leads in assists with four and adds four goals to the offensive attack.

The Griffons are 3-8 on the season and 0-5 in MIAA play. Missouri Western's three victories came against Southwest Oklahoma State (2-0), Emporia State (2-1) and Washburn (2-1). The wins against Emporia State and Washburn were in non-conference games. The Griffons are currently on a five-game losing streak coming into Saturday's game.

The Griffon offense, which comes in average one goal per game, is led by freshman K.C. Ramsell, who scored the Griffons' lone goal in the first matchup. The forward from Bellevue, Neb. has a team-high five goals in 11 games. Fellow freshman Katie Kempf adds two goals on the season, and sophomore Ashley Juravich has two scores and two assists. Ashlyn Castillo chips in three assists to lead the Griffons in helpers.

Junior Kelly Voigts has appeared in all 11 games as the goalkeeper for Missouri Western, making 91 saves and allowing 20 goals. Voigts has a 1.81 goals against average and a .820 save percentage. Her record is 3-8 on the season, including one shutout win.

After Saturday's game, the Tigers close out the season, their first in school history, with home games against Northeastern State on Tuesday (Oct. 25) and Washburn on Saturday (Oct. 29).
