Box Score
Box Score

The Tiger volleyball team outlasted Northwest Missouri State on Friday evening (Oct. 28) in five sets, picking up their first road win in MIAA play since 2009. All sets leading up to the fifth set were decided by scores of 25-21, with FHSU winning the first and forcing the final set by winning the fourth. The Tigers took the last set 15-11.

Fort Hays State ended their winless drought on the road in MIAA play at 21 matches. The last MIAA road win prior to the win over NWMSU on Friday night occurred at Southwest Baptist on October 10, 2009. It was also the first win for FHSU at Northwest Missouri State since joining the MIAA in 2006. With the win, Fort Hays State improved to 15-12 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA.

Madison Schwartz came out on fire to start the match for FHSU, putting down seven kills in the opening set. She accounted for half of the team's 14 kills in the set. Schwartz led the team in kills on the night with 13.

The FHSU offense sputtered in the second and third sets, generating just 19 kills over the two sets. Northwest Missouri State put down 29 kills over those two sets to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

FHSU capitalized on NWMSU errors in the fourth set to force the fifth and final set. Twelve Bearcat errors helped the Tigers overcome an .081 hitting percentage in the set.

The Tigers produced their best single-set attack percentage of the match in the final set, hitting .286 with nine kills to just three errors. Yadira Jacquez put the finishing touch on the comeback win with her 12th and final kill of the night to win the match. The Tigers took advantage of Bearcat miscues with the score knotted at 9-9, going on a four-point run off two NWMSU attack errors and a bad set, coupled with a service ace by Kylee Hoagland. Jacquez provided the final two points for FHSU with kills.

Also reaching double figures in kills for FHSU was Jenna Ulrich with 10. Megan Glandon had a solid offensive effort with seven kills and just one error to hit .316 in the match. Kayla Zoglman had 40 assists and Tracie Hileman led FHSU with 30 digs.

FHSU plays for the second consecutive night on the road on Saturday at Truman in Kirksville, Mo., beginning at 6 pm. The Tigers knocked off the Bulldogs earlier this year in Hays when they ranked 24th in the nation.
