The Tiger women's soccer squad continues home MIAA action on Tuesday (Oct. 4) as the Tigers host Southwest Baptist at 4 p.m. at the FHSU Soccer Stadium. The game is the second of six MIAA conference contests.
Fort Hays enters the game with a 3-5-1 records, and the Tigers are coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Truman on Saturday (Oct. 1), which drops their conference record to 0-2. The loss ended the Tigers' two-game win streak. In the defeat, FHSU generated very little offense, getting off just one shot, however, the defense held tough until the 75 minute goal, allowing the lone Truman goal.
Forwards
Cindy Benitez and
Joanne Glynn continue to lead the offense for FHSU. Glynn, a sophomore from Lakewood, Colo., leads the team with four goals in eight games, and Benitez, a junior from Garden City, Kan., leads the team with four assists in nine games. Glynn and Benitez total nine and eight points, respectively.
Kelsey Grey has played all nine games in goal for the Tigers. The freshman from Littleton, Colo., has allowed 11 goals for a 1.19 goals against average. She has 42 saves and two shutouts this season.
The Bearcats of Southwest Baptist come to Hays with a 1-7-2 overall record and 0-2-1 in MIAA play. In their MIAA games, the Bearcats lost to Northwest Missouri State (2-0) and Central Missouri (0-4) and tied Washburn (1-1). The tie with Washburn is the latest match for SBU as the Bearcats hosted the Lady Blues on Saturday (Oct. 1). SBU also played MIAA opponents Missouri Southern and Truman in non-conference games. Their lone win came against Missouri Southern, 2-1.
The Bearcats struggle to score goals, averaging 0.56 goals a game, while scoring six on the year. The SBU defense allows more than two goals a game. Five of the Bearcats' six goals come from senior midfielder Kelly Isaac.
Between the pipes for SBU is junior Megan Link. A native of Wildwood, Mo., Link made nine starts for the Bearcats, allowing 2.11 goals for a save percentage of .809. Sophomore Paige Hemphill also appeared in goal in one game, playing 17 minutes and making two saves.
After Tuesday's game, the Tigers hit the road for two straight. First the Tigers travel to Emporia on Thursday (Oct. 6) for a 4 p.m. game, and on Saturday (Oct. 8) FHSU plays at Missouri Southern at 11 a.m.
