Tigers Take First Set but Fall in Four to No. 4 Lady Blues

The Fort Hays State volleyball team faced the No. 4 Washburn Lady Blues on Tuesday night (Nov. 8) at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan. After taking the first set 25-23, the Tigers dropped the final three sets and fell in four. Fort Hays State falls to 17-14 on the season and 5-11 in the MIAA while Washburn improves to 29-1 and stays unbeaten in conference play at 16-0.

Fort Hays State got a big night out of Sara Hewson, who put down 15 kills to go along with 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season and second in a row. Madison Schwartz added 10 kills and the Tigers hit .123 but held Washburn to a hitting percentage of .199. Jenna Ulrich had a career-high nine blocks (two solo, seven assist) as she went against one of the top hitting teams in the conference. Tracie Hileman had 21 digs to lead the Tigers defensive efforts to go along with Hewson and Kayla Zoglman's 12.

Breanna Lewis led a balanced Lady Blue attack, which finished with 58 kills, with 18 kills while Hillary Hughes (11) and Jessica Fey (10) each registered double figures as well. Washburn also had four players with more than 10 digs, led by Kelsey Lewis with 15. The Lady Blues added 13 blocks as well.

Fort Hays State continues the tough late season road swing on Friday (Nov. 11) at Emporia State. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.
