Despite a 22-8 advantage in shots by Fort Hays, the goals were equal at 1-1 in a draw between the FHSU women's soccer team and Emporia State on Thursday night (Sept. 15) at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. Although both teams are in the MIAA, the game was scheduled as a non-conference contest.
The Hornets took the lead in the 12th minute, scoring off a header from Mallory Walden on a corner kick from Sarah Anderson. The goal was the only score of the first half, as the two teams were equal in shots with five apiece in the first 45 minutes.
Cindy Benitez put in the equalizer, her first goal on the season, in the 56th minute of the match, scoring from about 30 yards away on a shot that sailed in over the outstretched arms of the Emporia State goalkeeper.
The second half play was dominated by the Tigers. FHSU had 14 second half shots, while holding Emporia State to zero. The Tigers had many scoring opportunities in the second 45 minutes, but FHSU only managed the one goal.
After two overtime periods of 10 minutes each, the game ended with the final score of 1-1. The Tigers record is now 1-3-1 on the season.
FHSU takes to the road again this weekend, traveling to Washburn on Saturday (Sept. 17) for a 6 p.m. road contest. The match is the first of the MIAA conference season for the Tigers.
