Tigers Take Two From Bethany on Monday Night

The Fort Hays State volleyball team matched up with Bethany (Kan.) College on Monday night (Sept. 19) for a non-conference doubleheader at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers were able to take a pair of straight set wins to move to 8-5 on the season.

Match 1: FHSU def. Bethany 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-12)

The first match of the night featured several Tigers who have not seen a lot of playing time yet this season. Every player who played and attempted more than one attack had a hitting percentage of at least .100 and as a team FHSU hit .324. Leading the attack was Yadira Jacquez, who had a season-high 13 kills with just one error and added 11 digs for her first double-double as a Tiger. Shelby Zoglman, seing her first extended action as a Tiger, put away nine kills to go along with 10 digs.

Taylor Elkinton had 40 assists for the Tigers along with seven digs and two kills. Five different Tigers recorded a block in the match, led by four from Zoglman. Only four players for Bethany recorded a kill, with Bryanna Cool leading the way with six. Allison O'Neil had a double-double for the Swedes with 11 digs and 10 assists.

Match 2: FHSU def. Bethany 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-14)

Fort Hays State brought out the starters for the second match,  but the result would quickly become the same. FHSU rushed out to a 13-1 lead and never looked back in downing the Swedes 25-8 in the first set en route to another quick three-set victory.

Megan Glandon put together a strong match for the Tigers, dropping 11 kills on just 14 attempts without committing a hitting error. Madison Schwartz also put down 10 kills for the FHSU. Kayla Zoglman registered 25 assists in setting up the offense and also had six digs and three kills. The defensive effort was spread around by the Tigers, with 11 of the 13 players to play recording at least one dig, led by Tracie Hileman with 10. Six players notched a block for FHSU, with Kylee Hoagland leading the way with four.

Bethany College had a negative hitting percentage for the match, and were led by four kills each from Samantha Anderson and Shelby Broeckelman.

Fort Hays State improves to 8-5 on the year with the victories, eclipsing the teams win total from each of the past two seasons. They now will look to break through and gain a conference victory this weekend with matches against Northwest Missouri State on Friday (Sept. 23) and Truman on Saturday (Sept. 24).
