The Fort Hays State volleyball team pushed its overall record to 15-6 on Friday (Oct. 5) at the SBU Crossover Tournament in Bolivar, Mo. with a pair of wins over schools from Arkansas. The Tigers defeated Arkansas-Monticello 3-0 in their first match of the day, then defeated Southern Arkansas for a second time this year by a score of 3-0.
Fort Hays State 3, Arkansas-Monticello 0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15)
The Tigers trailed by three early in the first set and never let the Cotton Blossoms build a lead any larger. Arkansas-Monticello led 18-15, but the Tigers went on a 4-1 run to tie the opening set at 19-19. Another three-point burst pushed the Tigers their first lead at 22-20 and held off the Cotton Blossoms to take the first set 25-22.
The Tigers cruised from that point winning the next two sets by 10 points each.
Jenna Ulrich, the reigning MIAA Hitter of the Week, remained hot by putting down 12 kills with just one error on 23 attempts, hitting .478.
Kylee Hoagland remained errorless by putting down eight kills on 18 attempts, hitting .444.
Madison Schwartz added eight kills and
Sara Hewson had seven.
Kayla Zoglman finished with 35 assists and
Makenzie Weinman was the only Tiger to reach double figures in digs with 14.
Fort Hays State 3, Southern Arkansas 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21)
The Tigers won the first two sets handily and then used a late burst in the third set to put away the Muleriders in straight sets. FHSU defeated Southern Arkansas earlier in the year at the Panhandle State tournament, but that match went five sets.
After winning the first two sets by eight points each, FHSU faced a 20-17 deficit in the third. The Tigers went on a six-point run from that point, which included a pair of kills by
Jenna Ulrich and she coupled with
Sara Hewson for a block in the run.
Kayla Zoglman capped the six-point run with a solo block. Hewson and
Makenzie Weinman capped the comeback with a pair of kills to end the match.
The Tigers dominated defensively at the net with 13 points scored on blocks. Ulrich tied her career-high of nine blocks with two solo and seven assisted.
Ulrich led the team in kills with 10, followed by
Kylee Hoagland and Hewson each with eight and
Taylor Mares added seven.
Kayla Zoglman had 29 assists and
Makenzie Weinman had a team-high nine digs.
Fort Hays State concludes the tournament on Saturday with matches against Northwestern Oklahoma State and Henderson State (Ark.).
