Tigers Run Win Streak to Five Matches with Pair of Saturday Wins

The Fort Hays State volleyball team pushed its win streak to five matches, moving to 17-6 overall on the season, with a pair of wins Saturday (Oct. 6) at the SBU Crossover Tournament in Bolivar, Mo. The Tigers picked up straight-set wins over Northwestern Oklahoma State and Henderson State.

Fort Hays State 3, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-21)

The Tigers had a very efficient first set, hitting .429 to jump out to the early 1-0 lead. The Tigers cooled off from that point, but still were too much for Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-18) to handle. They held the Rangers to hitting percentages under .100 in the second and third sets, which included a -.030 hitting percentage in the second set.

Jenna Ulrich and Sara Hewson tied for the team lead in kills with seven each and Mallory Flagor added six. Kayla Zoglman had 25 assists and Makenzie Weinman and Flagor tied for the team lead in digs with 11 each.

Fort Hays State moved to 16-6 overall with the win.

Fort Hays State 3, Henderson State 0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-12)

The Tigers made a clean sweep of its competition from the Great American Conference over the weekend with a straight set win over the Reddies. FHSU hit over .200 in the first two sets and held Henderson State (4-14) to .000 in the first set and .064 in the second set. The Tigers hit only .088 in the third set, but it was an ugly set for both teams as the Reddies hit -.143.

Taylor Mares and Kylee Hogland each posted hitting percentages of .400 in the match. Mares had eight kills and no errors on 20 attempts, while Hoagland had seven kills and one error on 15 attempts. Madison Schwartz had seven kills and Jenna Ulrich added six. Kayla Zoglman posted a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs. She was one of four Tigers to reach double figures in digs. Makenzie Weinman led the way with 15, followed by Schwartz (14), Zoglman (13) and Tara Hoekman (10).

Fort Hays State moved to 17-6 overall on the season. The Tigers focus their attention to Tuesday (Oct. 9) when they host Missouri Western in MIAA play in Hays at 7 pm.
