McPhail Named to CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Team

Fort Hays State sophomore javelin thrower Makayla McPhail has been honored as a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American in NCAA Division II for 2012. The Liberal, Kan., native finished second in the nation this year in javelin, also earning All-American honors for her athletic achievement, and has carried a perfect 4.0 GPA through three years of school at FHSU. The honor is voted on by a national panel of sports information directors.

McPhail gives FHSU three Academic All-Americans, which ties the most for FHSU in one academic year, which also occurred in 1993 and 2000. She joins Alex Whitehill (football) and Traci Keyser (women's basketball) as recipients of the honor this year for Fort Hays State. McPhail and Keyser are two of just five student-athletes at Fort Hays State to carry a perfect 4.0 GPA and the only two that have attended three years of school at FHSU, as the other three are all freshmen. McPhail is a Health and Human Performance major at FHSU.

McPhail broke the FHSU record in the new model javelin twice in 2012. She threw 159'4" to win the individual MIAA title in the javelin, topping the old record of 158'7" set in 1999 by Regina Taylor. McPhail would go on to break her own record at the NCAA Championships a few weeks later with a throw of 160'9" to finish second.

Fort Hays State now has 36 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in the school's history. The first CoSIDA Academic All-American honor for FHSU occurred in 1975. It's the 23rd since FHSU joined NCAA Division II in 1991-92.
