No. 11 Tigers Move to 5-0 with 5-2 Win over SNU

The No. 11 Fort Hays State men's soccer team defeated Southern Nazarene, 5-2, on the road in Bethany, Okla. in the MIAA opener for both teams. Four Tigers scored in the 5-2 rout. The 5-0 (1-0 MIAA) Tigers travel to No. 13 West Texas A&M Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference showdown.
 
The Tigers scored early as Daniel Peralta scored his team-high fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick 31 seconds into the game. SNU played with 10 players after the PK as Brock Amaya received a red card.
 
The game was tied at 1-1 in the 16th minute when the Tigers knocked in an own goal, giving SNU a goal.
 
FHSU's Diego Cabral scored his first of back-to-back goals in the 30th minute. On the first goal, Cabral put in a cross from Patrick Brennan. Thirteen minutes later Cabral scored off a corner kick, dribbling 15 yards from the corner and then scoring to the far side for a 3-1 Tiger advantage. The goals were Cabral's third and fourth goals of the season.
 
SNU scored on a penalty kick of its own in the second half in the 78th minute to pull to within one at 3-2.
 
The Tigers, however, pulled away with two goals in the final 6 minutes. Freshman Austin Clifton had a part in each goal. On the first goal, Clifton's cross was knocked in by Michael Cole in the 85th minute. Clifton got in on the scoring on the final goal as he lobbed a shot over the driving SNU goalkeeper. The goal and assist were both first in Clifton's Tiger career.
 
The Tigers finished with 27 shots, including 15 on goal, while SNU totaled 16 shots and seven on goal. FHSU dominated the second half shot totals with 15 shots to six for SNU.
 
Ryan Pakieser played all 90 minutes in goal for FHSU, allowing the two goals and making five saves.
 
The Tigers travel to Canyon, Texas on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. match with No. 13 West Texas A&M.
