The Fort Hays State volleyball extended its win streak to four matches on Saturday (Sept. 22) with wins over Southwestern (Kan.) College and Johnson & Wales University at the Johnson & Wales Tournament in Denver, Colo. FHSU defeated both teams in straight sets, winning against Southwestern 25-19, 25-20, 25-18 and against Johnson & Wales 25-12, 25-10, 25-14. FHSU is now 12-5 overall on the season.
Fort Hays State 3, Southwestern (Kan.) College 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18)
The Tigers had a consistent match against Southwestern, putting down 16 kills in each set on their way to a straight-set victory. The Tigers were a bit sluggish on the attack in the first set, but then hit .312 in the second set and .316 in the third set. Fort Hays State hit .264 overall in the match.
Taylor Mares led the Tigers in kills with nine, hitting .538 for the match.
Sara Hewson added eight kills and
Madison Schwartz had seven. FHSU produced 45 assists on their 48 kills in the match, mainly split between
Kayla Zoglman with 28 and
Lauren Lorenz with 14.
Makenzie Weinman had a team-high 14 digs, followed by
Tara Hoekman with 10.
Jordan Stalder led Southwestern in kills with nine. Jacqueline Erlanson had 15 assists, followed closely by Rachel Vieyra with 14. Kaitlyn Munoz led Southwestern in digs with 12.
Fort Hays State 3, Johnson & Wales 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-14)
The Tigers were very efficient in a straight-set win over host school Johnson & Wales. FHSU hit .478 in the opening set and then a whopping .650 in the second set, before cooling to .296 in the third set. The Tigers hit their highest overall percentage of the season at .457 with 37 kills and just five errors on 70 attempts.
Mallory Flagor was the lone Tiger to reach double figures in kills with 11. She hit .500 for the match with just one error.
Ashley Evans added six kills.
Lauren Lorenz played the entire match at setter and produced 23 assists.
Makenzie Weinman had a team-high 11 digs.
Demi Coca led Johnson & Wales in kills with seven. Brandi Geiser had 19 assists and Roni Gibbs had seven digs.
The Tigers now gear up for a pair of MIAA matches next weekend (Sept. 28-29) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Washburn, currently ranked fifth in the nation and unbeaten, comes to Hays on Friday and then Emporia State comes to town on Saturday. Fort Hays State is 2-2 in the MIAA.
