Box Score 2 The Tiger volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on the second day of the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic in Grand Junction, Colo., defeating Western State (Colo.) in four sets and Oklahoma-Panhandle State in straight sets. The Tigers moved to 6-3 overall on the season with the wins.
Fort Hays State 3, Western State 1 (25-22, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19)
Even going up one set early, the Tigers had to battle hard to knock off a Western State squad that entered the match just 1-5 overall. Western State knotted the match with a 25-18 win in the second set and then held the lead on the Tigers the majority of the third set before the Tigers overtook them late to win 26-24. The Mountaineers remained pesky for a good portion of the fourth set until the Tigers put them away with a late run.
Sara Hewson led the Tigers with 16 kills, hitting .394 for the match.
Jenna Ulrich had nine kills and
Kylee Hoagland added eight. The assists were split evenly between
Kayla Zoglman and
Lauren Lorenz. Zoglman had 18 assists and Lorenz had 17.
Makenzie Weinman recorded a team-high 14 digs.
Western State outhit FHSU .201 to .197, but FHSU recorded four more blocks and nine more digs. Service errors were a problem for the Mountaineers, recording 14 in the match.
Fort Hays State 3, Oklahoma-Panhandle State 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-17)
Fort Hays State had no problems in rolling over Oklahoma-Panhandle State in its final game of the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic. The Tigers were hitting nearly .450 as a team through two sets, then that number dropped significantly late in the third set with a lot of reserves seeing action. The Tigers still finished with 38 kills to just nine errors in the match.
Jenna Ulrich led the way for FHSU with 11 kills, hitting .647 in the match with no errors.
Kylee Hoagland dialed up a .583 hitting percentage with seven kills and no errors.
Taylor Mares was also efficient with four kills on five attempts with no errors (.800 hitting percentage).
Kayla Zoglman finished with a team-high 19 assists and
Sara Hewson had a team-leading 15 digs.

Kylee Hoagland was the lone Tiger named to the all-tournament team at the event.
The Tigers host Nebraska-Kearney in the MIAA and home opener Tuesday (Sept. 11) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Nebraska-Kearney was No. 2 in the latest set of Division II national rankings.
