Volleyball Experiences Three Match Slide on Friday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 After opening the season 4-0, the Tiger volleyball team saw its win streak snapped and lost all three matches it played on Friday (Sept. 7) at the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic in Grand Junction, Colo. The Tigers took a 3-2 loss in a hard-fought five-set match against Texas Woman's, then could not rebound losing in straight sets to No. 24 ranked Grand Canyon and straight sets to Colorado Mesa.

Texas Woman's 3, Fort Hays State 2 (22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 12-15)

Down two sets to one, Fort Hays State fought from a 23-21 deficit in the fourth set to win the last four points and force the decisive fifth set. The Tigers were up 8-7 when the teams switched sides of the court, but Texas Woman's came out of the brief break in action on a four-point run to build an 11-8 lead. The Pioneers kept their lead at two or greater the rest of the way to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Taylor Mares had an outstanding game for the Tigers, putting down 19 kills with just four errors on 38 attempts for a .395 hitting percentage. The kills were also distributed pretty evenly among other Tiger attackers. Jenna Ulrich put down 12 kills, while Madison Schwartz and Sara Hewson each had 10. Kayla Zoglman had 50 assists and Makenzie Weinman had a team-high 13 digs.

Viktorija Jablonska was the go-to player for TWU, putting down 22 kills. She hit .457 in the match. Texas Woman's remained undefeated on the season with the win at 5-0.

No. 24 Grand Canyon 3, Fort Hays State 0 (19-25, 22-25, 15-25)

After dropping the heartbreaker to start the day, the Tigers immediately turned around and ran into the buzzsaw of Grand Canyon University. Grand Canyon, which knocked off last year's national runner-up and No. 3 ranked team in the nation last week, moved to 6-0 on the year with a straight set win over the Tigers.

Stats from this match are unavailable at this time and more details on the match will be posted once stats are available.

Colorado Mesa 3, Fort Hays State 0 (20-25, 13-25, 17-25)

The Tigers could not find anything left in the gas tank to stop the home team Colorado Mesa from cruising to a straight set win in the nightcap. The Mavericks did not play any matches prior to the one against the Tigers on Friday, after falling to Grand Canyon the night before in a five-set thriller.

Jenna Ulrich and Madison Schwartz tied for a team-high seven kills each. Kayla Zoglman had 13 assists and Makenzie Weinman had 14 digs.

Christian Otzen led the way for CMU with a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs.

Fort Hays State looks to turn its fortune back around on Saturday when it faces Western State (Colo.) and Oklahoma-Panhandle State.
