Box Score
In a physical contest that saw fouls outnumber shot attempts, Fort Hays State University women's soccer, fell, 2-1, to Washburn on Friday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.
Â
Each team had 13 shots for the game. The Tigers (4-6-1, 0-3-1 MIAA) were called for 14 fouls, and WU (5-5-0, 2-2-0 MIAA) for 16.
Â
Amanda Talbott had FHSU's only goal in the game, scoring her second of the season in the first half, unassisted.
Â
FHSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 5:39, using a WU foul to set up a free kick by Talbott, which she hit from the top of the box.Â
Â
WU, though, would answer back just before halftime. Lara Doescher took a free kick from just outside the left half of the box, and though it was caught by Barnaba, the officials ruled it beyond the goal line, awarding a score to the Ichabods.
Â
At half, FHSU had five shots, just less than WU's seven. The Tigers were tagged for nine fouls (one yellow card) in the first half, while WU was whistled for seven violations (one yellow card).
Â
The Ichabods took the lead at 51:41, as Brianna Ament's header shot found the goal. Caysie Beetley and Megan Buckley assisted on the play.
Â
At 72:38, FHSU nearly had a game-tying goal by
Hannah Jurgens, who launched it from the top of the box, only to see a diving Tori Fuglister of WU make the play.Â
Â
The Tigers would attack again at 76:19, but were once again spoiled by Fuglister, who stopped
Kylee Loneker's breakway attempt.
Â
After a stoppage with 17 seconds remaining, the Tigers would have one last chance for a score on a corner kick. A scramble at the goal saw several last-minute shot attempts, but no goals were scored, closing out the match.
Â
