Despite first half struggles, Fort Hays State pulled away from Northwest Missouri State in the second half for a 65-53 win in Hays on Wednesday night (Feb. 6). FHSU shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half, but warmed to 50 percent in the second half to pull away after trailing by one at halftime. Fort Hays State moved to 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the MIAA, while Northwest Missouri moved to 11-9 overall, 5-7 in the MIAA.
Fort Hays State jumped out to an early five-point lead, but Northwest Missouri State edged its way back to tie the game 9-9 with 9:16 remaining in the first half. The Bearcats went on a 6-0 burst to take a seven-point lead, but the Lady Tigers pulled back within one by halftime.
Fort Hays State would not lead again until the 13:10 mark of the second half, which was part of a 17-2 run that eventually gave it a lead of 12 points at 51-39 with 6:49 remaining. The lead dipped under double figures just one more time and Fort Hays State's largest lead was 14 points with 2:45 to go in the game.
Kate Lehman led FHSU in scoring with 19 points, going 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 at the free-throw line.
Katelyn Edwards was very active on the glass, posting her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Tera Ingalsbe also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points.
Ashleigh Nelson was the only Bearcat to reach double figures with 15 points. Annie Mathews had a team-high nine rebounds for NWMSU. Monique Stevens led the Bearcats in assists with five.
Fort Hays State looks to extend its win streak to four games when it hosts Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Tipoff is set for 2 pm.
