McPhail Named to CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America First Team

Fort Hays State junior javelin thrower Makayla McPhail was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America First Team for 2013. McPhail is now a two-time Capital One Academic All-American, after earning second team honors last year. She is also a two-time performance All-American in the javelin, finishing as the national runner-up in the event two years in a row.

McPhail, also the winner of the NCAA Elite 89 Award in women's outdoor track and field as the athlete at the Division II Outdoor Championships with the highest GPA, a perfect 4.0. She has completed four academic years at Fort Hays State, as she competed for the Fort Hays State volleyball team in her first two years out of high school. In her second academic year at FHSU, she began competing with the track and field team. McPhail is a Health and Human Performance major at FHSU.

McPhail gives Fort Hays State three Academic All-Americans for the second straight year. She joins Jesse Trent (football) and Maddie Holub (softball) for the 2012-13 academic year. McPhail is the first repeat recipient of the honor for FHSU since Darcie Schmitz, also of the women's track and field team, earned Academic All-American honors in the spring of 2010 and 2011. This is the 39th CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in Fort Hays State University history. FHSU women's track and field has garnered seven Academic All-American honors in school history, with McPhail and Schmitz each leading the way as two-time recipients.

Fort Hays State has had three Academic All-Americans in an academic year three times in its history now, with two of those occurring the last two years. The other time it occurred was in 2001-02 when Casey Seyfert (football), Jamie Heiman (women's basketball), and Dustin Dreher (baseball) were honored.
