Fort Hays State rolled to a 44-point win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday night (Dec. 8) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays by a score of 94-50. The Tigers improved to 6-3 overall with the win, while NWOSU dropped to 2-6.
The Tigers opened the game on 9-0 run and never looked back, breaking off a string of 10 unanswered to take a commanding 20-4 lead at 10:08 in the first half. Soon after, a layup from
Dom Samac began 21-3 burst for the Tigers that lasted just under five minutes, with a string of 14 unanswered as part of the run. During that stretch, NWOSU was held without a field goal for over four minutes. The Tigers led by 31 at the break, taking a 48-17 advantage into locker room. They held NWOSU to just 22.2 percent shooting from the field in the opening half.
After back-and-forth play for the first nine minutes of the second half, the Tigers roared with a 25-4 run that capped just inside the four-minute mark. Fort Hays State's biggest lead of the game was 45 points with 4:41 remaining.
The Tigers finished the game a red-hot 64.7 percent from the field (33-of-51), which was also the same percentage they shot from beyond the 3-point line (11-of-17).
Dom Samac led the Tigers with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, going 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-3 at the free-throw line.
Royce Williams had a perfect night shooting the ball, going 5-of-5 beyond the 3-point line and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line for 17 points.
Jake Stoppel and
Achoki Moikobu each had 13 points, and
Jeremy Wilson had 10.
Craig Nicholson notched a team-high nine assists and five steals.
T'aries Taylor led the Rangers in scoring with 17 points, their only player in double figures. The Rangers finished the game at 35.1 percent from the field overall and just 21.4 percent beyond the 3-point line.
The Tigers take a week off before returning to action on Tuesday, December 16 at home against Bethany College. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
