Fort Hays State football plays its first road game of the 2014 season on Saturday (Sept. 13) at Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. The game is featured as the MIAA Network Game of the Week. The television broadcast is set to go live at 2 pm, with kickoff set for about 2:07 pm. The Tigers are looking to bounce back from a tough loss in the season opener to Central Oklahoma last week in Hays.
Audio from weekly FHSU Football Press ConferenceFort Hays State and Northeastern State both struggled offensively in the first week of the season. FHSU had 181 total yards in its 26-7 loss to Central Oklahoma in Hays, while Northeastern State had 180 total yards in a 37-0 loss at No. 9 ranked Pittsburg State. The Tigers had just nine first downs, replicating their amount from the season opener from 2013. The Tigers hope to shake that slow start against a RiverHawks team picked last in both the coaches and media preseason conference polls.
The Tigers are looking to move above .500 in road games under head coach
Chris Brown. FHSU struggled to a 3-22 record on the road in its first five years in the MIAA, but since Brown has taken over, FHSU is 8-8 in road games since the start of 2011.
Fort Hays State is looking to shake off its lowest total offensive output since the 2011 season, when it had 172 yards against Pittsburg State on October 8, 2011. Six different players had carries against Central Oklahoma, with
Kenneth Iheme and
Kevin Spain tying for a team-high 22 yards each. Spain threw for 65 yards in the game and
Ed Williams hauled in three passes for 64 yards.
DeAndre James had the only big highlight for FHSU in the season opener, an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Micheal Jordan led the defense with 12 tackles and one forced fumble.
This will be the first meeting with Northeastern State since the 1990 season. The Tigers are looking for their first-ever win over NSU, as NSU won the only two previous meetings in 1989 and 1990.
