Fort Hays State men's soccer, ranked No. 23 in the nation, heads north to Rapid City, S.D., this weekend for two matchups at the GNAC/MIAA Shootout, hosted by South Dakota School of Mines. FHSU faces the University of Mary on Friday (Sept. 12) at 5 pm, in a neutral-site game, then squares off with host South Dakota School of Mines on Sunday (Sept. 14) at 1:30 pm.
FHSU (1-1) hosted the Days Inn Soccer Classic last weekend, defeating Colorado State-Pueblo, 2-1, before falling 0-2 to Drury.
Diego Cabral and
Michael Cole had goals for the Tigers against CSU-Pueblo, while
David Lucio had one assist.
As a team, FHSU fired 33 shots on the weekend, putting 15 on goal. Cabral had 12 shots (five on goal), while
Damion Cooper and Cole each had four shots.
In goal, senior
Kent Freund started against CSU-Pueblo, allowing one goal with five saves in 90 minutes played.
Jason Babyak, the returning MIAA Freshman of the Year, allowed two goals with four saves against Drury on Sunday.
University of Mary opens its season against FHSU, returning seven starters for the 2014 season, including two-time All-GNAC selection Johnathan Sellars, who had a goal and two assists last year. The Marauders finished 2013 at 3-10-3 overall, scoring 17 goals as a team while allowing 33. In goal, U-Mary has two returners in Michael Frenzel, who earned All-GNAC honors in 2012 but sat out last season with an injury, and Jack West, who posted a 1.96 goals against average in 2013.
South Dakota School of Mines (0-2) had just one goal last week, scored by Sean Tabbert. The Hardrockers fired 18 shots over the weekend, putting 11 on goal. Tabbert, Michael McGraw and Andreas Skau each had three shots for the team. Goalie Braeden Federle allowed three goals (1.44 per game) in two games last week, totaling five saves.
