Football Heads to No. 8 Pittsburg State for MIAA TV Network Game of the Week

Fort Hays State at No. 8 Pittsburg State
Saturday, September 27, 2014 - 2 pm
Carnie Smith Stadium - Pittsburg, Kan.

Fort Hays State football looks to end a 35-year winless drought against No. 8 ranked Pittsburg State this Saturday (Sept. 27) in Pittsburg, Kan. The teams meet in the MIAA TV Network Game of the Week at 2 pm from Carnie Smith Stadium. The Gorillas are 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA, while Fort Hays State is 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA.

The last win for Fort Hays State over Pittsburg State occurred in 1978, a 35-30 win in Hays. The teams have met 20 times since with Pittsburg State holding a 19-0-1 record in that span. A 16-16 tie in 1995 is the only result that keeps the Gorillas from holding a 20-game win streak in the series, but they enter this contest on an eight-game win streak over FHSU. The last meeting between the schools was in 2011, a 38-17 win for the Gorillas in Hays in a season that saw them go on to win the national championship. FHSU is looking for its first win in Pittsburg since 1976.

Fort Hays State's defense has been strong each of the last two weeks in a pair of wins. The Tigers won the turnover battle in its wins over Northeastern State and Lindenwood by a 4-1 count. The Tigers are currently +4 for their season turnover margin. FHSU is allowing just over 15 points per game, but faces a Pittsburg State team that has allowed only seven points for the whole season through three contests.

The Tigers are looking to keep a winning record on the road under head coach Chris Brown. Since he took over as head coach, the Tigers are 9-8 in road games (1-0 so far this year).

Offensively, Edward Smith leads the Tiger rushing attack with 174 yards on 30 carries. Treveon Albert is averaging 85.7 yards passing per game and has three touchdowns through the air and two on the ground. Ed Williams leads the Tiger receivers with 200 yards on 12 catches. Defensively, Brock Long leads FHSU in tackles with 27. Justin McPhail is close behind with 25 tackles, a MIAA-leading 3.0 sacks, and a team-leading two interceptions.
