Cole's Header in 83rd Minute Lifts No. 23 Tigers to Victory in Opener

Box Score The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win over CSU-Pueblo in its season opener on Friday (Sept. 5) at the Days Inn Soccer Classic in Hays. Michael Cole buried a header off a crossing pass from David Lucio at 82:04 to push the Tigers to 1-0 overall on the year.

Both teams had good scoring opportunities early, but could not cash in until Diego Cabral broke the scoreless tie on a penalty kick in the 41st minute. CSU-Pueblo was whistled for a foul just inside the top of the box to allow the penalty kick opportunity. Cabral cashed in with a missile to the low left corner that got through CSU-Pueblo keeper Sam Haseltine, despite getting his hand on it.

Trailing the Tigers 1-0 at half, the Thunderwolves would get the equalizer goal at 65:24 on a 30-yard free kick that Jack Gonzales bended to the high left corner of the net.

The teams traded good opportunities the rest of the way until Fort Hays State broke through on the pass from Lucio to Cole inside eight minutes to play in the match.

Fort Hays State finished with an 18-14 advantage in shots on the evening, but CSU-Pueblo had nine saves from their keeper compared to five by Fort Hays State's goalkeeper, Kent Freund. Freund picked up the win for the Tigers, going the distance between the pipes.

The Tigers (1-0) will face Drury University (1-0) on Sunday at 1:30 pm in the final game of the Days Inn Soccer Classic at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
