The FHSU women's soccer team hosts a pair of non-conference, in-region matches this weekend as No. 6 Emporia State comes to town on Friday (Sept. 17) before Nebraska-Kearney follows on Sunday (Sept. 19). Friday's kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and Sunday's match will kick at 1 p.m.
The Tigers look to bounce back at home this week after suffering their first loss of the season Sunday (Sept. 12) at CSU-Pueblo. Fort Hays State enters the weekend 2-1-1 overall, scoring five goals over the first four matches. Zariah Smith, Carly Walker, Alex Hutton, Jordan Thompson, and Amanda Rapuduski have each netted a goal this season for the Tigers.
Fort Hays State has taken more than twice as many shots as its opponents this season, 71 to 33. The Tigers have put almost half of those shots on target (31). The Tiger defense kept a clean sheet for the first 343 minutes of the season before CSU-Pueblo found the net in the second half of Sunday's contest. Keeper Deonna Wellbrock has compiled 20 saves so far and leads the league in goals against average (.237) and save percentage (.952).
The Hornets are 4-0 so far this season with two shutout wins including their most recent win against Colorado Christian. They have outscored their opponents 15-3 so far and have more than doubled their shots (77-31). Nebraska-Kearney has posted a 1-3 record with all three losses by one goal. Their one win came against MSU-Moorhead with a 1-0 final.
The Tigers are 8-4-4 all-time against Emporia and are currently on a three-game skid. The last match ended in a 2-1 loss in Hays and the Tigers last beat the Hornets in 2017, a 2-0 victory. The Tigers and the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney have an all-time series of 11-3-1. The Tigers have won the last five matches, with the last match ending in a 1-0 victory in Hays in 2019.
