The 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State women's soccer team wraps up the regular season by traveling to Topeka to take on Washburn on Friday (Oct. 21) at 6 p.m. before returning home to host Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday (Oct. 23) for Senior Day with kickoff scheduled at 2 p.m.
Fort Hays State enters this week fifth in the MIAA standings with 17 points. They sit just one point back of a tie for third between Emporia State and Northwest Missouri State, both with 18, while Central Missouri leads the MIAA with 22 points and Central Oklahoma is second with 19. Though Fort Hays State is still unbeaten on the season, ties only count for one point in the conference standings, while wins count for three points. All four teams in front of the Tigers have more wins in conference play, despite having somewhere between one to three losses.
Fort Hays State (9-0-7, 4-0-5 MIAA) defeated Missouri Southern 5-0 and played to a 1-1 draw with No. 5 ranked Central Missouri last week. The Tigers are now the only unbeaten team in the MIAA. FHSU has outscored its opponents 22-7 so far this season, allowing the fewest goals in the conference. Hannah Mares leads the team with six goals, followed by Montserrat Diaz with four. Isabel Robben continues to hold top marks in the MIAA in goals against average (.441) and save percentage (.875), as well as the second best mark in individual shutouts with 9. She combined for one other shutout this season with Maddie Meehan.
Washburn (10-4-2, 5-3-1 MIAA), currently sixth in the MIAA standings and just one point behind of FHSU, defeated Newman 6-1 in its last match. The Ichabods have outscored opponents 29-15, while averaging 13 shots per match. FHSU leads the all-time series 12-5-2 after defeating WU 1-0 in Hays earlier this season. The last time these two teams met in Topeka they finished in a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.
Nebraska-Kearney (0-13-3, 0-7-2 MIAA) fell to Missouri Southern 1-0 in its most recent match. The Lopers have scored four goals so far this season, while averaging six shots per match. The Tigers lead the all-time series 14-3-1 after defeating the Lopers 1-0 in Kearney earlier this season. The last matchup between these two schools in Hays ended in a 3-0 victory for Fort Hays State.
