No. 4 UCM Takes Series Finale on Senior Day

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team fell in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon (May 1) against No. 4 Central Missouri, 12-2. The Tigers finished the weekend with 32 base hits after collecting seven on Sunday, more than any other team against UCM this season.

The Mules jumped in front with a solo home run on the second pitch of the game and never looked back. UCM scored in seven of the eight innings played, including three runs in the first, four in the seventh and single runs in five separate frames.

The Tigers had several opportunities offensively, with FHSU leaving nine batters on base on the day. FHSU loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but a strikeout and a double play got UCM out of the jam. The Tigers again loaded the bases without an out in the second inning, managing one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jenner Kehe before leaving three on base.

The second Tiger run came on a solo home run from Grant Schmidt in his final at bat as a Tiger. The senior worked a full count before lifting a ball over the fence in right for his third home run of the weekend, his 14th of the year and the 30th of his career.

Six of UCM's 14 base hits were home runs, including five solo shots. Padraic Walsh (0-2) got the start, going 6.1 innings and allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits while striking out one batter. Dylan Hamilton and Cole Zimmerman also worked out of the bullpen in their final game at Fort Hays State.

Seven different Tigers collected base hits, including six singles and Schmidt's home run.
