Strong Close to Regular Season for Tiger Track and Field

Competing at three different events across the country, the Fort Hays State track and field team posted 13 provisional performances and broke one school record during the final weekend of the 2022 regular season (May 13-14). More importantly, five of those marks improved previous provisional qualifying marks, solidifying their spot on the national list.

The women's 4x400m relay squad of Lyric Holman, Kendra Clary, Taylor Savolt and Mattie Rossi capped of the day with a school-record time of 3:45.12 at the Loper Twilight in Kearney, Neb., shaving more than one-half second off their previous best set one month ago in California. The Tigers will climb multiple spot on the national performance chart and currently sit in contention for a trip to the 2022 NCAA DII Outdoor Championships later this month in Allendale, Mich. (May 26-28).

Holman also improved her national ranking in both the 100m dash and the 200m dash. The junior won the 100m race in 11.53, shaving four hundredths of a second off her best time of the year to currently climb to 11th on the DII list. She was second in the 200m race with a season-best mark of 23.78, improving her time by 15 hundredths of a second to move into a tie for 11th nationally.

Savolt had a big final weekend in the 400m hurdles, hitting the provisional mark twice for the first time all season after posting a personal-best by more than one full second. She posted a time of 1:01.17 in Friday's Concordia Twilight in Seward, Neb., good for the second-best time at FHSU during the DII era. The sophomore set a facility and meet record while moving to 21st on the national performance chart, firmly on the bubble for selection to the national meet. She beat the provisional time again on Saturday in Kearney with a mark of 1:01.58.

Xavier Robinson also improved his spot on the national rankings list after clearing a personal-best 49-9 in the triple jump in Kearney, good for first place. Robinson passed three competitors on the DII performance chart in the process, moving up to 13th at this time, while also moving up to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart.

The Tigers hit a pair of provisional marks in Cleveland, Tenn. at the Lee University Last Chance Meet. Gretchen Kuffel placed ninth with a time of 10:51.62, while Robbie Schmidt was fourth out of 73 runners in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:19.16. Schmidt was third amongst DII competitors and finished in front of numerous Division I athletes.

Elsewhere in the field events in Kearney, Addie Berens and Rhyann Brown both cleared the provisional distance in the javelin. Berens placed second with a top mark of 142-7, while Brown was fifth at 139-4. Mark Faber cleared a provisional height of 16-2.75 in the pole vault to place third, while Kolgan Ohl placed first in the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of 186-0.

The Tiger men had two other provisional performances on the track in Kearney, including the 4x400m relay squad of Hayden Albright, Jack Pakkebier, Ethan Lang and Nolan Churchman combining for a time of 3:13.08 to finish second. Lang also hit a provisional by winning the 800m run in 1:51.55. Albright ran a personal-best 47.93 in the 400m dash, breaking the 48-second mark for the first time in his career.

The Tigers will now await the announcement of the full field of competitors for the NCAA Championships, scheduled to be released Tuesday evening (May 17) on NCAA.com.
