ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Fort Hays State tennis team fell 5-2 on Sunday (April 16) against Ouachita Baptist. The Tigers were able to take two singles matches on the day but moved to 7-15 overall on the season, while Ouachita Baptist improved to 5-15.
The Tigers of Ouachita Baptist won each of the three doubles matches, but Fort Hays State put together two close contests at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Maria Paz Diaz and
Fiorella Mendez (No. 2) finished two games short with a score of 6-4, while
Stefany Stemmer and
Irina Alfonso (No. 1) lost 7-5.
Alfonso and Mendez took home wins for the team throughout singles play. Alfonso (No. 2) got the victory after beating her opponent in straight sets with scores of 6-4, and 6-3. Mendez walked away with the win at the No. 4 singles spot after taking down her opponent 6-2, 6-2.
Paz Diaz (No. 3) was also close to a victory for the Tigers but fell in the tiebreaker set 10-8. Stemmer (No. 1) was held scoreless in set one but was able to take three games in set two, falling 6-0, 6-3.
Kylie Aufdengarten won a total of eight games between the two sets at the No. 6 singles position, losing 7-5, 6-3.
Grace Unruh (No. 5) was defeated 6-4, 6-2.
The Tigers will wrap up their season on Wednesday (April 19) with a road match against Sterling College at 3:00 p.m.
