Tiger Season Closes in Rain-Lengthened Contest with Ichabods

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball saw its 2023 season come to a close on Thursday (May 4) in the first elimination game of the MIAA Tournament at Envista Softball Complex. The Tigers fell by a score of 3-1 to Washburn in a contest that took nearly three hours to complete once it started an hour and a half later than scheduled. FHSU finished the season at 31-24 overall, while Washburn moved to 37-15 overall.

A lightning delay, which also brought a heavy pocket of rain, kept the game from starting on time. Washburn scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, benefitting from a Tiger throwing error. The game-decisive blow came in the third when a leadoff single set up a two-out, two-run home run by Danielle Schlader that pushed the Ichabod lead to 3-0.

Fort Hays State produced its only run of the game in the fourth when Carly Stuke led off with a solo blast over the wall in right center. The game then went into its second rain/lightning delay that took another 42 minutes. Delays within the contest added on 54 minutes to the length of the game.

Fort Hays State had plenty of opportunities to break through for more runs throughout the game, but left nine runners on base. The Tigers left runners on base in every inning except the sixth. FHSU had two reach base with no outs in the seventh, but could not find a way to scratch any runs across. FHSU outhit Washburn 7-4 in the contest.

Bailey Carlson was charged with the first two runs of the game and took the loss. She allowed three hits and a walk in 2.0 innings of work. Savanah Egger relieved for 4.0 innings and allowed just the home run and a walk, striking out three.

Sadie Walker threw the first 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and a walk with a strikeout. Walker surrendered Stuke's home run. Jaycee Ginter relieved for the final 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Tigers won at least 30 games for the first time under Adrian Pilkington this season. It was their fourth appearance in the MIAA Tournament under her guidance.
