Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Match Magic Lifts Tigers to 1-0 Win

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team sealed another shutout win on a rainy night in Hays Friday (Sept. 15). The Tigers defeated the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 1-0 to improve to 4-0-1, while UNK dropped to 1-4-0. Friday night's rain showers made for tough playing conditions, but Fort Hays State was able to net the game-winning goal with under four minutes left.

The two teams headed into the locker room tied 0-0 at the halftime break after Fort Hays State outshot the Lopers 15-1. The Tigers dominated the time of possession but could not find the back of the net. Six different Tigers recorded a shot on goal through the first period of the match. The lone shot of the first period for UNK was a shot on goal, saved by Isabel Robben.

Rain began to fall as the teams got set to start the second period, making scoring opportunities harder to come by. Fort Hays State recorded six shots in the second half, while UNK was limited to just one. The Tigers also prevented the Lopers from earning any corner kicks in the match.

With only 3:15 remaining on the clock the Tigers finally were able to break the tie. Gracen Chaney delivered a strike off of a corner kick that was batted around just in front off the goal and ricocheted into the net by Hannah Mares. Mares took a total of five shots on the night, but none bigger than her final touch in the 86' to win the match for the Tigers.

Fort Hays State stands alone as the only unbeaten team left in the MIAA.

The Tigers will now shift their focus to a match against the Emporia State Hornets on Sunday (Sept. 15) with first kick scheduled for 2 p.m.
