The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 13-10 overtime win over Washburn last week in Topeka. Starting safety Michael Polley was called upon to kick the game-winning field goal in overtime from 34 yards in a game that FHSU trailed 10-0 at halftime. The Tigers are now 4-1 this season in games decided by eight points or less.

Central Missouri is coming off a 31-27 loss at home to Emporia State last week. The Mules have dropped their last three games after a 3-0 start to MIAA play. UCM has also played in a lot of close contests this year, going 2-3 in games decided by eight or less.

The Mules lead the all-time series with the Tigers 11-9, which includes an 11-7 mark in MIAA play. However, the Tigers are 7-3 against the Mules in the last 10 meetings. FHSU won 31-21 last year when UCM was ranked No. 12/13 in the nation. In fact, the Mules were ranked four of the last five times they played in Hays and FHSU won all five of the contests. The three wins for UCM over the last 10 meetings have all been in Warrensburg. The winner of the FHSU vs. UCM matchup has scored at least 20 points in the last 11 meetings.

Fort Hays State has been good at creating turnovers this year. They lead the MIAA in forced fumbles with 11, and have nine takeaways off fumbles to go with six interceptions for the season. FHSU is one of eight MIAA schools with defensive touchdowns this season. The Tigers have two, which ranks second-best in the conference only behind Nebraska-Kearney's three.

Caleb Heavner leads the Tiger offense with 1,416 passing yards and 427 rushing yards. He averages 204.8 yards of total offense per game. Cale Cormaney leads the team in receiving yards with 272.

On the defensive side of the ball, John Johnson has 87 tackles to lead the Tigers, averaging just under 10 per game. He ranks second in the MIAA and ninth nationally in total tackles. Gaven Haselhorst has a team-best 4.0 sacks, while Polley and Michael Chavez each have two interceptions.

Central Missouri owns the best total offense in the MIAA, averaging 464.8 yards per game to rank sixth nationally. Donovyn Omolo has thrown for 1,821 yards, while Latravious Boyd has 395 rushing yards. Hogan Wasson has 695 receiving yards for the season. Garrett Hormann leads the Mules in tackles with 72 for the season, while Michael Harris has 4.0 sacks.
