HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball led wire-to-wire in Tuesday's Youth Day matinee at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers defeated Sterling College by a score of 78-61, improving to 4-1 overall for the season.
The Tigers used an 8-0 burst in the first half to take a 10-point lead to 18, and a 13-0 burst later in the first half to go from 14 up to 27 up. Fort Hays State took a 23-point lead into halftime (45-22).
The Tigers kept their lead margin in the 20s for the majority of the second half before the final margin settled at 17, which is the closest the Warriors were to the Tigers in the second half. FHSU's largest lead was 27 points, reached once in the first half and three times in the second half.
Dan Mukuna led the Tigers with 20 points, his third-straight game of 20 or more points.
Kyle Grill added 17 and hit three 3-point field goals. They were the only Tigers in double figures scoring as
Jahvari Martino and
Muhamed Kante each finished with eight. Grill led in rebounds with eight, while Kante and
Juju Ramirez each had four assists.
Camren Johnson came off the bench to lead Sterling with 18 points, hitting eight field goals in the game. Julian Smith added 13.
FHSU held Sterling to 37.3 percent shooting, while finishing at 46.5 percent overall. FHSU's seven 3-point field goals were its most in a game so far this season.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday (Nov. 29) when they play host to Manhattan Christian College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
