HOLLIDAY, Texas – Fort Hays State Softball split another pair of games on Saturday (Feb. 8) at the Mustang Round Up in Texas. The Tigers dropped their first contest of the day, 3-2 to Southwestern Oklahoma State, before ending the weekend with a runaway 9-0 run-rule victory over Southwest Baptist. FHSU is now 2-2 overall on the season.
Southwestern Oklahoma State 3, Fort Hays State 2
Southwestern Oklahoma State jumped out to a 3-0 lead through four and a half innings and it turned out to be too much for FHSU to overcome. The Tigers picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead down to 3-2, but stranded the potential tying runner at second base in the seventh.
Lexi Mohr and
Regan Curry drove in Fort Hays State's runs in the fifth inning. They were set up by a
Marisela Landa single and
Paige Thexton double. Mohr's RBI was on a groundout and Curry's was on a single.
Morgan Schmidt threw a complete game in the loss. She struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits.
Alexis Taylor picked up the win for SWOSU, throwing the first four innings of the game. She allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two. Reliever Jaycee McKee earned a save throwing the final three innings. She struck out one.
Fort Hays State 9, Southwest Baptist 0
Fort Hays State did all of its damage in two innings, scoring five in the second and then four in the third to run away with a 9-0 run-rule win over Southwest Baptist.
Savanah Egger and
Kylie Caspersen combined for a shutout win in the circle, Egger throwing the first three innings and Caspersen the final two. Egger struck out three and allowed two hits for her first win of the season. Caspersen retired the final six batters of the game and struck out two.
In the second, a
Regan Curry walk and
Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson single set up a run-scoring opportunity. An error committed off the bat of
Gracie Johns plated FHSU's first run. The error proved costly for SBU as
Lilly Mohr hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run blast, to make it 4-0. A
Madison Pierce double and
Marisela Landa single set up an RBI single by
Paige Thexton.
In the third,
Erika Flynn drew a walk to open the inning and
Kaydawn Haag followed with a single. That set up back-to-back RBI singles by Ramirez-Johnson and Johns. Landa drove in a run with a single and
Lexi Mohr drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the scoring.
Fort Hays State is scheduled to open at home on Wednesday (Feb. 12) against Bethany College in a doubleheader, weather permitting. The Tigers then head to Oklahoma next weekend (Feb. 14-16) for five more games.
Stats will be made available from each game soon.
